Jurne rocks a Serch sketch x 3

Serch served up this heater, and I wanted to show the 'interpreting and reworking' part of the Exchange project, in a series of pieces done from the same initial sketch. In doing so, the transition from one artist's work to another artist's interpretation and reworking becomes more transparent, and easier to follow.

The first piece was done "as is", with little background additions. The emphasis was on recreating the sketch with paint on a wall, to get a feeling for the lines and letter movement on a large scale.

The second piece remained within the same framework of the first, with some accruements here and there. Bars get chopped/bent and curled, colors got added, the background got buffed. The arrows got a litle more elaborate. With the thinner style, I tightened and stretched the N, coming through with a no-look, behind-the-back pass to the E.

The third version got even more chopped and screwed, really breaking the E up, and putting a snorkel top onto the R.
The feline waiter is stuck serving up some laser-hot aerosol to the wall, while the bbq dude can't help but be cool as a fan.

Jurne paints a Rime sketch

Rime laid out a nice simple sketch for me on the wall with a fat cap and some blue spray paint. We were going for a "stay-warm, finish-before-the-sun-sets" kind of wall, but of course, that was only wishful thinking, as it was freezing cold out and we started buffing the wall around 2pm.



I liked the overall sketch; modifying the E to match the kick of the J, and playing on the idea of a letter form belonging to the 3D of another letter.



The dot of the J turned into some kind of pop art warp hole R. The whole piece adopted a comic book feel to it. Over all I was pleased with the outcome, although I think the N could use some fill designs to spruce it up, and the little triangle of yellow in the E is confusing and takes away from the piece.

Rime Paints A Version Of A Jurne Sketch

Here is one of Jurne's attempts at sketching my name for a night spot. He really didn't like the sketch he made so I tried redrawing it as you can see in my sketched version.

I ended up not using the sketch to paint a spot but instead used it to paint a production in a school yard (with Jurne, Host & Curve) during a frigid New York day. This was a really easy sketch to paint which allowed me to knock it out fast and add in a little character. Looking back on the letters, I feel I could have done more to work some areas, especially the "E"... Next time I guess?

Manage to finish up the outline jurne drew for me..Had a lot of fun with it. Went to the wall confused on what to do with it? 3d? no 3d? bright colours? white outline? and then all of a sudden it turned into something else. I see jurne's style as a very classical american style, so maybe thats where my stars and stripes theme came from..hope you like it man!

Taboo Sketches By Jurne

The 1st sketch was inspired by the style of Joe Shuster, who illustrated the early Superman comic strips of the 1930s and 40s. After sketching a bunch of Taboo pieces and not really liking how any of them came out, the word 'ta-boom' came to me while flipping through a book featuring reprinted Superman comics. I envisioned the letters to be exploding out of the background, and after sketching the explosion part, I got the idea to put some Spy vs. Spy characters in there as well. I kept the letters simple after trying out more complex ones because I felt that with the more connections and additions that I put on the piece, they took away from the effect of flying out of the explosion.
Your characters are always fresh, and I know you get down with the illustration outside of graffiti Taboo, so I'm excited to see how you do this.


The 2nd sketch is a 2-for-1 piece, an idea I have been playing around with a little in other pieces. I wanted to capture two similar, yet distinct letters for each letter of the piece.

Cant wait to see what you do with them, as always, change any and everything as you see fit...

Yo Stae!
I've been working on these sketches for you, and came up with these three.
The first ones pretty straight forward, I think maybe the T could be spruced up a little more.

This one I drew second, with the intention of having the bars of the E come back and 'frame' the piece. I got kind of carried away with the colored pencils going for a beveled look, and then really went overboard with the pseudo 3d/blue stuff...not so sure how I feel about that in particular, you be the judge.

The third one is a little more traditional...I wanted to capture a layered feel, and not put a 3D on it, thinking that it might compete with the depth achieved by the letters themselves. I tried to encorporate star shapes into the bars of the letters, at the ends of the S and the E, but they're a bit muddled by all the other stuff going on. Also, the loop of the A came out a little small I think.

Hyped to see what you do with em....

Taboo Sketch painted by Jurne

I really dug this sketch from Taboo, and thought it might look good on a freight. I wanted to stretch it out and have the dimensions of the train car emphasize the length of the piece.
When we showed up to the yard, there were no flat boxcars, and I didn't really want to try to stretch this piece over the door, so I decided to rock it a little smaller than intended, and just keep it to one panel.
I went with a nice Home Depot color scheme (an American brand paint scheme seemed right for the train), some Painters Touch Fossil for the fill, an Espresso outline, and American Accents Cabana Blue for the cloud.
In sketching the piece out, I made some modifications, connecting the U with the head of the R, as well as changing the bend of the N, and having the top of the E come from the N doubling back on itself. In hindsight, I think the U-R modification takes away from the dope mohawk that the R was rocking in the original sketch, and the strong kink in the bar of the R.
I like how the piece came out (Although the night shots arent ideal...I'll replace them when I get better ones), but Im not hyped on the color choices I made; should have gone with a dark gray for accents in the bottom of the piece, and a really light gray or pink in the top. In general, I should have spruced it up a bit with more colors. Also, I think I lost one of the coolest parts of the piece by not outlining 'The Exchange' bar of the E that Taboo crafted.
Painting the piece gave me some new insights on some of my letters, the J was a totally new shape for me, as well as the E. Thanks again to Taboo for the dope sketch, I'm working on yours and Stae's right now...

Jurne paints Honke Sketch

We painted the walls of a skate spot, Honke took the deck surface, I worked on the ladder section.
The original idea was to do a really colorful background with clouds of bubbles, and go with black and white for the letters, but we ran out of white, which led to the blue fade to white scheme.
It got crazy fumed out while we were doing this! It was a blast to collaborate on the wall with each other's outlines. I got some sound spray technique advice from him during the paint session, especially while trying to nail the egg-top E.
I kinda had a difficult time getting the flow of the letters down; Honk's saxophone swoops were a challenge; I'm definitely more comfortable with tighter, compact letters.
Im pretty happy with the result, although a thinner outline/less black bubbles might have really drawn out the black sections of the letters.

Here are my Jurne sketches. Hope you like them. I was told the J 2nd one looks a little like a Jedi5 J. I hope he doesn't come to my house to kick my ass or leave a bag of grapes in my trunk as he has been known to do. ANYWAY enjoy painting these sketches!

Jurne paints Stae 2 sketches

I ended up choosing these two sketches out of the style dossier Stae2 had on me.
It was really fun trying these styles out. I chose the chunky sketch for the truck because it was something I was more comfortable with given the amount of time we could spend at this particular spot. The shape of the E was pretty foreign to me, and I ended up sketching it a few times before it looked like the Stae2 version. I really liked how the U and N of the sketch are little dudes trying to hang with the older J, R and E.
The piece I ended up doing was the computer rock style Stae laced. I went for this one because I knew it was going to be really difficult to pull off; repeated angles of the bars are something Ive never foxed with. I went about painting the sketch in a manner opposite to that which I usually do. Did the sketch first, and then finished the 3D before I filled in the piece. I figured I might burn myself out trying to get the letters done first if I painted them first, and then skimp on the 3D details. The 3D really drew me to the sketch initially, and I want to do it justice.
It ended up being a "watching the sun rise" kind of night, but Im happy with the result. In hindsight, I would add more black to the 3D for sure. Also, I would maybe spruce up the doo dads inside the fill, maybe add a light blue or a lime green.
Can't thank you enough for the amazing sketches Stae. I owe you a bunch...
